Nakwaye Ku Daycare

Nakwaye Ku is a non-profit child care centre for children of students, staff, faculty and the general public. The daycare, located at Yukon College, Ayamdigut campus, offers quality child care for children aged 18 months to pre-kindergarten and is open from 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Daycare Program Description
The program is ‘child centered’ and is based on a "learning through play" philosophy. Programming is based on observed interests and children are involved in a variety of activities. Mutual respect and genuine caring must be present for a meaningful relationship to develop. The Center is licensed for 36 children, this allows for two toddler groups of six children with two staff and three preschool groups of eight with three staff. In most cases, the toddler group runs at least 1-2 children below full. The groups each use half of the Center, although, there are times when the age groups are combined following staff/child ratio. In addition, there are two staff that share the float position. They cover staff breaks and lunches, prepare children’s lunches, and are responsible for laundry and cleaning. Each staff member is responsible for developing programming for his/her own group, such as group time and art activities. The staff works together as a team and share the responsibilities of snack, free play activities: indoor and outdoor, gym, etc.

We have a parent board on the preschool side to provide information for the parents. An important part of the school’s success is the relationship that is developed with the families. On a daily basis, staff will share information with the parents about their child’s day. Parents are invited to come and spend time at the center with their children. They are also welcome to use the observation windows at any time to observe their child/ren.

Being located at Yukon College makes this the ideal setting for students in the Early Childhood Development program. The daycare provides a bright, open setting for practicum and college students to observe and evaluate an early childhood setting.
